About Cooled Motors
Cooled Motors is developing next-generation electric drive systems for high-performance automotive and aerospace applications.
We are building advanced propulsion technologies that combine innovations in electric-machine, power electronics, control systems and thermal management to deliver compact, efficient and scalable electric drives for the future of mobility.
Our work sits at the intersection of electric vehicles, aerospace propulsion, advanced manufacturing and clean technology. We are tackling some of the most important challenges in electrification: improving performance, reducing system cost, increasing power density and enabling more sustainable supply chains.
The role
We are looking for an Electric Machine Design Engineer to take a leading role in the electromagnetic design and development of our electric machine developments.
You will be responsible for translating system-level requirements into electric machine designs and taking those designs from initial analytical sizing and electromagnetic simulation through optimisation, detailed design, prototype manufacture and physical validation.
This is not purely a simulation role. You will work closely with mechanical, power electronics, controls, manufacturing and test engineers to develop complete electric drive solutions.
The role would suit an experienced electric machine engineer who combines a strong theoretical understanding of electrical machines with practical experience developing and validating real hardware.
Key responsibilities
You will:
- Lead the electromagnetic design and optimisation of electric machines from initial requirements through to prototype and validation.
- Carry out analytical sizing and first-principles calculations to establish and validate machine designs.
- Develop detailed 2D and, where required, 3D electromagnetic finite-element models.
- Optimise designs against different requirements
- Perform design sensitivity studies, optimisation and tolerance analysis.
- Work with power electronics and controls engineers to ensure machine designs are compatible with inverter voltage/current limits and control requirements.
- Support development of machine control strategies by providing appropriate electromagnetic models, parameters and performance data.
- Support prototype manufacture, including winding development, laminations, rotor/stator manufacture, assembly and supplier engagement.
- Define electromagnetic test and validation requirements and support testing on prototype machines.
- Correlate simulation and analytical predictions against dyno and experimental measurements and improve models accordingly.
- Investigate discrepancies between predicted and measured performance using structured engineering analysis.
- Support DFMEA, design reviews, technical risk assessments and verification activities.
- Produce clear engineering reports, design documentation, specifications and technical presentations.
- Contribute to new machine concepts, technology development and intellectual property generation.
Essential requirements
You should have:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Machines, Electromechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Significant practical experience in the electromagnetic design and development of electric motors or generators.
- Strong understanding of electric machine theory and electromagnetic design principles.
- Experience taking electric machine designs beyond simulation into prototype development and physical testing.
- Strong experience with electromagnetic FEA software such as ANSYS, JMAG, Altair Flux, COMSOL or equivalent.
- Ability to develop and validate first-principles and analytical electric machine calculations rather than relying solely on simulation software.
- Experience designing machines against inverter voltage and current constraints.
- Understanding of manufacturing considerations associated with electric machines, including laminations, windings, insulation, tolerances and assembly.
- Experience correlating electromagnetic simulation results with experimental test data.
- Ability to independently investigate complex technical problems and develop practical engineering solutions.
- Strong technical communication and documentation skills.
- Comfortable working within a multidisciplinary engineering team and taking substantial ownership of technical work.
Desirable experience
Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly valuable:
- Automotive traction motors, aerospace propulsion machines or other high-performance electric drive applications.
- A Master’s degree or PhD specialising in electric machines, electromagnetics or a related field would also be advantageous.
- High-speed and/or high-power-density electric machines.
- Electrically Excited Synchronous Machines (EESM/EESM), Synchronous Reluctance Machines (SynRM), Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines IPM/PMSM, induction machines or other advanced machine topologies.
- Development of novel electric machine architectures rather than optimisation of established designs alone.
- MATLAB/Simulink or Python for machine modelling, data analysis and optimisation.
- Power electronics and inverter-machine interaction.
- Mechanical stress analysis of high-speed rotors.
- Thermal modelling and cooling of electric machines.
- Electromagnetic NVH analysis.
- Design for manufacture and design for automated production.
- Electric machine prototype manufacture, winding and assembly.
- Dyno testing and development of electric machines.
- DFMEA/FMEA and structured engineering development processes.
- Automotive, aerospace or other high-reliability engineering environments.
What we are looking for
Beyond specific software experience, we are looking for someone who understands why an electric machine behaves the way it does. You should be comfortable moving between analytical calculations, FEA, experimental data and physical hardware, and be capable of making engineering decisions when the answer cannot simply be obtained from a simulation package.
You will be expected to take ownership of technical problems, challenge assumptions and help establish the design methodologies that Cooled Motors will use as the company grows.
Why join Cooled Motors?
At Cooled Motors, you will have the opportunity to:
- Work on a novel electric traction motor technology.
- Help develop power electronics and controls for a new electric-drive platform.
- Work directly on real prototypes, not just simulations or documentation.
- Gain exposure to electric machines, inverters, embedded control, cooling systems and testing.
- Take real ownership in a small, ambitious engineering team.
- Contribute to technology aimed at reducing rare-earth dependence in electric vehicles and other electrified systems.
- Work with applications across automotive, aerospace, heavy-duty transport, drones and industrial electrification.
Location
Cooled motors has multiple small offices and access to co working spaces in the following locations Sheffield, Coventry, Oxford and London. We operate a hybrid working model and site work when essential.
